Brogan Group provided an all-encompassing access solution incorporating scaffolding, mast climbers and goods / passenger hoists on Phase 1 of the Battersea Power Station development.

Circus West as it is known, designed by Simpson Haugh Architects and de Rijke Marsh Morgan involves the construction of a mix of 866 apartments, including 11 penthouses, retail facilities, theatre space and business studios. The two blocks, vary in height from 8 storeys at its southern end, rising to 18 storeys at its northern end are built on a podium with two levels of basement parking.

Installation

Brogan Group designed a scheme and erected a large gantry to support mast climber platforms used for cladding the elevation that runs parallel to the Battersea Park station to Victoria rail line. It was designed in conjunction with Carillion and Network Rail.  Mast climbers were chosen for this elevation due to the close proximity of the rail line to the perimeter of the building in addition to programme, safety (avoidance of anything falling from height onto the railway line) and to minimise risk of distraction to train drivers. A combination of twin and single machines have been installed, several of which have sliding platforms to enable operatives to navigate past protruding balconies. The building also curves slightly, therefore, the mast climbers were erected to follow the curved perimeter of the building. Standard mast ties would get in the way of the glazing and copper façade panels as they are quite large, therefore, specially fabricated brackets to raker down to the top of the balcony locations were designed and installed.

Brogan Group is supplying 17 hoists to feed the blocks that make up RS1A and RS1B. The hoists serve the staggered blocks tying into the recessed fissures to enable works to continue on the surrounding facades. With maximum payloads of 2.7t and varied cage sizes and capacities ranging from 3.2m to 3.8m in length, the hoists allow for the fit out on all floors. A number of these machines have only recently been purchased forming part of the company’s continual investment in the latest generation machines.

Kenny Ryan, Project Directo, Carillion PLC

"Brogan Group are providing the 17no Hoists on the Battersea Power Station Phase 1 project for Carillion. They won the contract through a competitive tendering process showing innovative solutions to the interfaces with the concrete frame and external cladding. We carried out a factory visit in Europe to view the proposed hoists prior to appointment and believe that we have bought an excellent product with good run time. Brogan Group are a collaborative contractor who work well with other contractors to achieve project success."
