10th October marks World Mental Health Day, a day to raise awareness of ‘emotional health’ or ‘well-being’ and its’ equal importance to good physical health.

Good Mental health is characterised by a person’s ability to fulfil a number of key functions and activities. These include the ability to learn, feel, express, and manage a range of positive and negative emotions, form and maintain good relationships with others, and cope with and manage change and uncertainty.

Statistics show that around 1 in 6 people a week experience a common mental health problem.

Anxiety and depression are the most common problems, with around 1 in 10 people affected at any one time.

This topic is particularly important to the Construction Industry in light of stats from the CIOB ‘Understanding Mental Health in the Built Environment Report 2020’ that reflect this general trend in the population.

Expanding Brogan Group’s Mental Health Support

Brogan Group are focused on continuously improving the level of support with mental health concerns within the construction industry and have introduced a range of initiatives. Our core team of Mental Health First Aiders, who have been supporting our teams, will be increased by a further two qualified women next month, to ensure a suitable gender balance to all of our staff, who may require support on-site and in our offices.

We recently supported World Suicide Prevention day on 10th September, with a specific briefing to all of our operational teams, and throughout June and July, we fundraised for a walking campaign we created for the Lighthouse Construction Industry Charity, who provide emotional, physical, and financial wellbeing support to construction workers and their families.

We spoke to Mark Shanly, one of our existing Mental Health First Aiders on his views on the Mental Health First Aid training:

“I think I’ve always been approachable with the team at work for any problems they’ve had in the past and now I’ve had the mental health first aid training it makes me feel more confident in helping in a more professional way.  It gives me satisfaction in knowing the lads and ladies at work have someone to talk to in their hour of need.”
