Brogan Group are working with a new contractor on a 5 storey project situated directly beside Wembley Central tube station, called Wembley West 1. The development is comprised of Two high street facing blocks, Three mid-level blocks and a single 18-storey tower. The site was entirely situated on the footprint of what was originally a car park, which, along with other logistical site challenges, resulted in quite a complex and tight working area for scaffold access to be provided.
With knowledge of the complexity of the project and the will to ensure all aspects of the build were achievable, Brogan Group carried out initial site surveys and meetings with the client prior to submitting a tender. With the client’s commercial and engineering advice, we were able to assist in building their scope and ensuring all access was feasible. Due to the brickwork façade along each block, staggered scaffold bays were utilised to ensure standards were not overloaded. Along with this, multiple 5.0m long cantilevered loading bays were required along the 18-storey elevations. For this, our in house engineers were on hand to ensure the scaffold was suitably designed and installed.
As the client was utilising podium areas between blocks as the main site storage area, a large amount of the 60m high scaffold around the 18-storey tower was required to be bridged and cantilevered over void areas to ensure constant access for the loading of material. This, not only presented a challenge to our engineers, but also to our experienced scaffold operatives who erected these structures to the highest standards of safety. Through this combination of in-house design development and on site technical expertise, we were able to ensure that site logistics ran smoothly and their project remained on schedule.
With the logistic difficulties presented by the site footprint, hoists were required for each block to feed materials. These were to be installed at basement level and erected through voids in the podium slab, allowing a clear route into the structures for the offloading of material. Brogan Group provided early technical advice to the client and their engineers, to ensure the most efficient location of hoists and that all void locations were suitable. This proved a tremendous help to the project logistics, and our skilled team of installers were able to coordinate the hoist and scaffold access allowing for a smooth interface between both.
