Common tower and hoists to go up on new landmark project in London

Brogan Group have secured the access works for 20 Ropemaker, London, a new 27 storey structure designed on a series of stepped terraces on the corner of Ropemaker Street and Finsbury Pavement.

The project includes 22 floors of office space (419,093 sq ft), five accessible roof terraces and three basement levels, provided for retail servicing, plant, facilities management, cycle and shower facilities.

Our remit includes the supply and installation of a common tower and six hoists. Two twin passenger goods hoists will allow operatives and materials to be transported throughout the site whilst two 5000kg goods hoists will ensure larger items such as cladding and plant reach the floor levels utilising the common tower to overcome the stepped profile of the building. One of the goods hoists is to be placed on a terrace at level 9 and tied into the building up to level 14, where again the building steps in, allowing the hoist to be tied into the common tower to service the remaining levels up to 19.

A restricted footprint due to the neighbouring Moorgate train station, as well as a complex cladding finish and a multi-tiered structure were a few of the challenges Brogan Group had to overcome in designing a solution. The design of the hoists and common tower required co-ordination with the structures other permanent and temporary works using federated 3D modelling and clash detection to ensure the access solutions allowed the building to be completed as much as possible whist serving the buildings 19 floors and two basement levels.

On completion, the new commercial building, rising to 110m at its tallest point, is set to bring more than 419,093ft² of Grade A, BREEAM ‘Outstanding’ office space to the London Borough of Islington and premium retail provision.
