53-storey residential tower

Sitting in London’s financial District, Canary Wharf is 53-storey residential tower, The Madison. The development is inclusive of 423 new homes ranging from one, two and three bedrooms. At ground level, a new landscaped public realm blends with that blends with the extensive gardens adjacent to the Madison provides a new public square for the Marsh Wall East area.

Alongside luxury apartments, the development also provides gym and spa facilities, commercial spaces and lounges with amazing panoramic views of the city.

The Madison

We provided the scaffolding, a number of hoists reaching a maximum height of 181m and a common tower also reaching a height of 181m to the construction of The Madison.

The common tower we provided to the Madison accommodates multiple hoists that can travel to differing or the same levels at any time including twin hoists and Colossus. It can service 70 storeys/300m height in standard configuration and is able to go higher with additional bracing. Space is provided for personnel using three access points: hoists conjoined on both sides and the staircase within the common tower.

We are providing our largest hoist to date, the Colossus to the construction of The Madison. The Colossus, which has the design of the colossus statue on it, is the largest of its type in the market with dimensions of 5m x 3.1x. It can safely carry 40 passengers or 4000kg up to 350m at a lifting speed of 40m per minute. Notably, Colossus’ internal height of 3.1m enables the distribution of pods and cladding.

The system also allowed for the fit-out of the lower floors to commence earlier while the building was being constructed.

'Brogans have worked closely with the Balfour Beatty team to plan project logistics, build sequence and inform both the cladding, modularasation and internal fitout package scopes.During the pre contract services agreement of the project, early engagement was made with Brogans Group as a preferred supplier, to understand how the hoist could be designed and manufactured to best suit the project needs. One of the primary requirements on the project is the large pre-fabricated bathroom pods which are transported from Italy and distributed directly into the tower from the articulated wagons. To enable this process to function correctly the largest goods hoist (The Colossus) was fabricated oversized to accommodate the largest DDA bathroom pod measuring 4.5x5x4.5m with a critical element being the clear height available once the temporary run off of the tower structure was taken into consideration (coordinated with the assistance of Brogans Group). The temp structure or common tower is a bespoke design which facilitates the use of 3No. hoists and reduces the number of cladding panels that are to be left out of the initial build. A giant structure, the common tower is pre-fabricated on the ground and installed with one lift via the Tower crane, by a specialist working at height team provided by Brogans. The team are highly trained at working in high risk environments controlling the 8 tonne lift accurately and positioning it in place to allow the distribution of material further up the tower. During installation no loose components are permissible at height, with the Brogan team securing every component with designed lanyards or restraints to remove the risk of falling items. In several locations, Brogans Group have successfully fabricated their own solutions to restrain bespoke components such as landing gates, structural ties and structural legs.'
